Job Description

Position Summary

The Marketing & Communications Manager is a mission-driven storyteller and strategist responsible for leading the development and execution of a comprehensive marketing and communications plan for Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas. This role is critical to building local brand visibility, community engagement, and donor loyalty across the diverse and growing communities of Austin, San Antonio, and the broader Central & South Texas region. The ideal candidate will be both creative and analytical, blending compelling storytelling with data-informed decision-making to drive awareness, wish referrals, and donor retention.

Position Responsibilities

Strategy Development

  • Create and implement an annual marketing and communications calendar and strategy with action plans to increase brand awareness and drive engagement and resources to the chapter.
  • Track defined data, metrics, and benchmarks to meet goals established for revenue, engagement, and brand awareness.
  • Support the development team in creating effective acquisition and retention strategies, including impactful development materials and storytelling.
  • Manage crisis communications and serve as the internal point of contact for crisis issues. Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization.

Creation & Execution

  • Lead the development and utilization of all key external messaging and positioning, with an emphasis on powerful storytelling. Write accurate, emotionally resonant stories that drive community understanding of the impact of a wish.
  • Oversee the management of the chapter's social media accounts and websites, ensuring the development of dynamic and impactful content. - Create and manage print communications, marketing materials, and electronic communications for revenue (including events) and mission-related projects.
  • Oversee the management and fulfillment of marketing deliverables for corporate partners, including National Alliance partners, ensuring appropriate stewardship of relationships. Identify and develop brand-related stories (written, video, photo, etc.), including wish stories for local and national media opportunities, collaborating with Make-A-Wish America as appropriate.
  • Experiment with innovative content formats (e.g., Reels, TikToks, livestreams) to expand digital reach and donor engagement.
  • Lead digital execution across email, website, and social media platforms to support fundraising and engagement campaigns.
  • Ensure marketing content is culturally relevant and inclusive, with bilingual messaging where appropriate.

Relationship Management

  • Build strategic partnerships with local media outlets, influencers, creative agencies, and community organizations in Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding areas.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, printers, and freelancers, providing clear guidance and ensuring deliverables meet brand and strategic goals.
  • In coordination with the CEO and Chief Development Officer, serve as media spokesperson at events, wish reveals, corporate check presentations, and local media opportunities.

Administrative

  • Maintain internal communications calendar and assist with internal communications (Staff What’s Up, Facebook Workplace page).
  • Prioritize media opportunities and prepare talking points, speeches, and presentations for the CEO, board, and volunteers.
  • Oversee brand protection by ensuring proper use of Make-A-Wish marks and adherence to national identity standards.
  • Maintain the photo and story library to ensure accessibility for future marketing and promotional needs.
  • Ensure the chapter website and event microsites are regularly updated with accurate information and a strong user experience.
  • Adhere to all Make-A-Wish America performance standards and Chapter internal controls, policies, and procedures.

Candidate Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional work experience in communications and marketing, with a track record of improving engagement and brand outcomes.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in communications, marketing, graphic design, or related field.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro), email marketing platforms, and/or tools such as Canva or video editing software.
  • Ability to write and edit compelling stories across platforms with emotional clarity and cultural relevance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across the organization in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong project management skills, detail-oriented, and organized.
  • High level of discretion to sensitive constituent information and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Flexibility to attend occasional early morning, evening, and weekend events.
  • Must have reliable mode of transportation to travel across the chapter territory when needed, including Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding communities. Position requires travel throughout the chapter territory and flexible hours.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft computer programs, including Outlook, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • A passion for the mission of Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas. - Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Job Description

HB Strategies is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Marketing Communications Manager to expand our team. This new position will enhance overall marketing efforts to heighten its presence with key audiences in markets where the firm has a presence. The Marketing Communications Manager will be an integral member of the marketing team and its strategy, development, and execution of a variety of marketing initiatives – with a particular focus on managing the new business proposal process while collaborating with the Marketing Director on digital strategies and content generation. Our goal is to deliver valuable, effective marketing programs that will significantly contribute to the growth and long-term success of the firm, its thirteen offices nationwide, and seventy-plus professionals.

This new position will be a part of a four-member marketing team reporting directly to the Director of Marketing and Strategic Communications. The individual selected will function in office in one of the firm’s state capital offices, preferably Tennessee, Oklahoma, Missouri, or Texas.

Responsibilities

Lead the firmwide new business proposal process. The daily management of the process includes personal engagement across the firm to create tailored new business proposals for each of the firm’s practice groups.

Work closely with the Marketing Director to develop proactive strategies and collateral that heighten the presence of the firm and its principals.

Help drive meaningful online engagement through the firm’s social media platforms through unique content that promotes the skills and expertise of the firm’s principals and their work for clients.

Proactively generate new ideas and develop and execute strategies that can strengthen brand awareness with key audiences.

Collaborate with other team members to create impactful and brand-affirming marketing initiatives.

Support the Marketing Director with editorial oversight of the marketing team’s products.

Assist the Marketing Director in maintaining brand guidelines and consistency across the firm.


Candidate Qualifications

Required Skills

A clear understanding of, and experience in, government at the state or federal level or with related organizations.

A proactive self-starter and problem solver with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team.

Demonstrated success in generating ideas and leading projects in an incredibly fast-changing environment.

Proven record of accomplishment in effective multimedia storytelling.

A strong work ethic and experience with working in a fast-moving environment managing multiple projects at once.

Strong writing skills and attention to detail.

Demonstrated success in digital strategies and content generation.

Successful project management with strong presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate ideas.
